If Issoudun was an open-air history book, so the castle district is one of the most captivating chapter. Nesting in the town center, this emblematic district witness of the old military power and the medieval effervescence of the city.
The castle district owes its name to the old medieval fortress which once dominated the town Built in the XIIth century by the lords of Déols, Issoudun's castle played an important defensive role for the Berry region. Unfortunatly, centuries of transformation and upheavals took down this imposant fortress, but its print stays inscribe in urbain memories.
Today, the remarquable remains are la tour Blanche, a powerful cylindrical donjon, and le BeffroiAujourd’hui, les vestiges les plus remarquables sont la Tour Blanche, un puissant donjon cylindrique, et le Beffroi, slender watchtower that offers a glimpse of the ancient fortified enclosure. Those monuments are the last witness of a warrior past and witness of the strategic importance of Issoudun in the Middle-Ages.
The castle district is also a living place where history mix perfectly with modernity. The paved alleys, the half-timbered houses and stone facade breath the old charm, as for the green spaces that brings a sweet and friendly touch.
