Le Bassin Versant

A Rich History in Developments

Modern transformations

La Théols, the principal river of the watershed, meanders peacefully on 50km long between Ambrault and Lazenay, before throwing itself in l'Arnon, then joining le Cher and finally la Loire. Its source bearthed from the resurgence of an underground river, giving life to this lowland watercourse that go trough our region.r

The watercourse of la Théols, forming a bowl, is delimited by ridges lines. All the water in this territory go towards the same outlet point, the confluence with l'Arnon. This hydrological system plays a crucial play in the maintenance of waters and the preservation of local ecosystem.

La Théols was arrange multiple times during the last centuries, reflecting the needs and human activities. In the Middle Ages, the monks created the Forced River, giving birth the multiple mills and artisanal activities such as the tannery, milling, and dry cleaners. The clues of this humaine intervention are still visible today, with sections of the canalised and perched river, which testify its patrimonial existance.

In the 1980, major works had been undertaken in order to clean up agricultural land and to limit floods from happening in the Théols's valley. Those works counted the cleaning, recalibration, reprofiling and displacement of the river bed. Hydrolic works, such as the tilting flaps, were installed to upgrade the water gestion, visible from different points along la Théols.

La Théols is not just a river, but a living witness between Men's interaction and nature trough the centuries. Its historic and modern works reflects continuous efforts to balance humain needs and environmental preservation. By visiting la Théols, you will discover a watercourse that held in itself history and legacy of the Champagne Berrichone.
