A Town with Deep Spiritual Roots

​At the intersection of the Avenier road, the imposant bell of the basilica shows itself, rich religious history symbol of Issoudun. In the Middle Age, this town had a dozen of churches and abbeys, which the oldest, the Saint-Paterne's church, was a roman edifice of the XIIth century. Balzac, in his novel "La Rabouilleuse" published in 1840, mourns the recent demolition of this "charming" church.

In 1854, the coming of the  Révérend Père Jules Chevalier in Issoudun mark the beginning of a new religious era. Aged of 30, he aspires to found a new congregation : the Missionnaires du Sacré-Cœur's society. With the Father Piperon, he undertake the construction of a new edifice dedicated to the heart of Jesus. Build between 1859 and 1861, the basilica is then extend by a chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame du Sacré-Cœur.

 

 

 

 

The inside of the Sacré-Cœur basilica, is a true art-work, orned by rich mural painting, stained glass windows, and many ex-votos witness of the devotion of faithful ones. The visitors can feel the spiritual intensity by exploring those sumptuous decoration.

The crypte of the chapel shelters the graves of boths founders, le Père Chevalier and le Père Piperon, perpetuating their memories and their devoments to the religious cause. Their influence continues to shine through the annual pilgrimage, especially on the fisrt days of september, attracting faithful from everywhere.
