Saint-Cyr's Church

A Historic and Art Jewel in Issoudun
Saint-Cyr's Church, only survivor of many churches and chapels who once adorn Issoudun, is a true historical treasure. Its construction goes back to the 800-860 period, under the impulsion of Charlemagne, according to the legend.
Unfortunatly, the church suffered form many destruction. In 1356, the English and the Black Prince ravage it during the hundred years war. Then, in 1651, a devastating fire kindles the town, causing again a lot of damage. However, the choeur was beautifully rebuilt in gothic style in 1456.
Inside, the Saint-Cyr's church is full or remarquable art-work. Above the main door, you can admire the monumental "Descente de Croix" of Jean Boucher, dated from 1625. This work, already explored by the painter for the Anger's cathedral, shows moving details : a cherub crying on the nails of torture and an angel dressed in pink, being among the most beautiful creation of Boucher.
The altar is also not lacking of slendor. The carved and gilded wooden candelabras, offered by Louis XIV during his visit to Issoudun in 1651, makes a majestic ensemble of the XVIIth century, listed as a historic monument.
In the Apse, a flamboyant gothic stained glass window of the XVth century, 15 meters tall, attrais all attention. This art-work was able to see the light thanks to a tax exemption allowed by Charles VII in 1453, to compensate the damages during the hundred years war. It illustrate the Saint-Cyr legend and his mother Sainte-Juliette.
At the end of the XIXth century, the Reverend Père Jules Chevalier, priest of Issoudun and creator of the Missionnaire du Sacré-Coeur, undertakes the enlargement of the roof and the creation of side chapels. In 1930, the bell tower is added, bringing a final touch to this beautiful structure.
More recently, in 2009-2010, Gérard Hermet has restored the base of the canopy, filling up the missing parts with abstract and subtile composition.
Saint-Cyr's Church of Issoudun is more than a not-to-miss place : its a living witness of history, a sacred art conservatory, and a not-to-miss for heritage lovers. Come to see this jewel and let you take by its timeless charm.
